THE PLANETS - ALL ABOUT THE SUN
Science of The Sun - King of The Solar System
The sun resides some 26,000 light-years from the Milky Way's center. Though it is special to us, there's literally BILLIONS of stars like our Sun scattered across the Milky Way galaxy (just let that mind-f*ck sink in for a minute before continuing).
Our sun formed more than 4.5 billion years ago, when a cloud of dust and gas called a nebula collapsed under its own gravity. As it did, the cloud spun and flattened into a disk, with our sun forming at its center. The disk's outskirts later came together to form our entire solar system, including Earth and the other planets.
This gravity from the Sun is so strong that it holds our entire solar system together, keeping everything from the biggest planets to the smallest asteroids & comets in it’s orbit.
Our home star is classified as a “yellow dwarf". However, the label “yellow” is misleading, since our Sun actually burns a bright white. On Earth, the sun can take on warmer hues, especially at sunrise or sunset, because our planet's atmosphere scatters blue and green light the most. The connection and interactions between the Sun and Earth drive the seasons, ocean currents, weather, and geography. Without the energy from our Sun, and Earth’s perfect distance from it, life would not exist.
Sad to say, the Sun will not last forever. It will continue to burn through it's hydrogen for another 5 billion years, and then helium will become its primary fuel. At that point, the sun will expand to about a 100 times its current size to become a “red giant” - swallowing Mercury and Venus, and maybe even Earth.
Meaning of The Planets in Astrology
"The day of the Sun is like the day of a King. It is a promenade in the morning, a seat on the throne at noon, a pageant in the evening" - Wallace Stevens
While Science is helpful in understanding the universe, Astrology is helpful in understanding ourselves.
In ancient times, societies believed the planets represented the Gods who controlled life on earth, and must be worshiped - with the Sun being the most powerful of them all. For thousands of years, ancient societies relied on the stars to tell them when to hunt and harvest. Kings & Queens relied on astrologers for advice on how to rule their kingdom, and when to go to war.
In modern astrology, The Planets symbolize energies in our solar system which manifest as fundamental urges & needs of the human psyche, and shape our unique personalities. When we’re aware of these energies, we can use our powers of free-will to consciously direct their expression to our benefit. When we’re not aware, we’re at their mercy. The planets are classified into 3 groups - Personal, Social, & Transpersonal. Their groups and meanings are as follow
I like to think of the planets as the ‘King’s Court’ or ‘Royal Roundtable’, where each planet serves as an ambassador of your Kingdom - which is your identity.
In the next section, I'll tell you more about the Sun in Astrology, and why it's the most important.
The Meaning of The Sun in Astrology
Getting to know the planets in astrology starts with getting to know yourself through your Sun Sign. This is the Zodiac sign the Sun was orbiting in on the day you were born. Knowing what energizes you and how you relate to self is your doorway into seeing who you truly are. Ancient cultures have always known about the power of the Sun and you can too! By wearing gemstones, such as Sunstone, or studying up on your Sun sign you are taking steps towards claiming your Kozmic Crown.
Astrologers consider The Sun as a planet (or luminary which means light). It's used to symbolize one’s outward self and ego, your conscious personality. It projects the energy focus of the moment, and where your attention will be directed on that particular day. It's your "way of being" in the world, represented by the expression of your life-force and the assertion of will. The Sun's energy fuels your supply of pride & confidence, and controls your sense of self. When you’re at your creative best and enjoying life to the fullest, you’re using the powers of your Sun sign.
Sunstone - Your KOZMIC Talisman
A talisman is an object that someone believes holds magical properties that bring good luck to the possessor or protect the possessor from evil or harm.
Sunstone gets it’s name from due it’s warm color and distinct & lively glitter - called aventurescence. The facets enhance the stone’s reflective feldspar inclusions, that shimmer in the light like rays of sunshine. The Sun has inspired mythological stories in cultures around the world, including those of the ancient Egyptians, the Aztecs of Mexico, and many others. Many of these stories involved Sunstone as a talisman that gave spiritual powers to it's posseser. According to Native American legend:
- A great warrior was struck by an arrow in battle. The blood from his wound dropped onto pieces of Oregon sunstone. The blood carried his warrior spirit into the stones, coloring them with shades of red and giving them sacred power.
